What Corian is

Corian and similar solid surfaces are acrylic resin with mineral filler. There is no stone in them, which changes everything about how they are restored: they do not etch and cannot be honed with diamonds, but they scratch, dull and scorch, and all three are sanded out.

How it is restored

The surface is sanded through progressively finer abrasives until the scratches, burns and stains are gone, then finished to the sheen the manufacturer intended. Matte and satin finishes hide wear best in a working kitchen; a gloss finish shows every mark and is rarely the right call for a benchtop. Seams and edge chips are repaired with matching material and blended.

Where it sits against stone

Solid surface is forgiving and repairable, which is its strength. It is also softer than any stone we work on, so it needs restoring more often. Hot pans mark it, and that mark is a sanding job, not a replacement.
